Emotion Regulation · Children & Teens · North York & Oakville
The feeling is real. So is the support.
When a child's emotions seem bigger than the moment, or when they have learned to keep everything quietly locked away, something is asking to be understood.
Emotion regulation difficulties always have a reason. At Whole Kids Health, we help children and teens understand what they are feeling and build the tools to take better care of it. North York, Oakville, and across Ontario.
What parents often notice
The reaction and the silence can both be signs.
Emotion regulation difficulties do not always look the same. For some children and teens, feelings come out big and fast. For others, everything gets pushed down and held in. Both are worth paying attention to.
When feelings come out big
- Outbursts or meltdowns that feel out of proportion to the situation
- Difficulty calming down once upset, even with support
- Intense frustration, anger, or distress over transitions or unexpected changes
- Saying or doing things in the moment they later regret
- Emotional exhaustion after a big reaction, for the whole family
When feelings get locked in
- Shutting down or going quiet when things feel overwhelming
- Withdrawing from people or situations that feel too much
- Appearing detached or disconnected even when something is clearly wrong
- Avoiding conversations about feelings or dismissing them entirely
- Tension that builds quietly and comes out in unexpected ways
Support that gets to the root of it.
Understanding the why
We offer three core services designed to support children and teens. Many families use more than one, and our intake process helps you figure out where to start. You do not need to have it sorted before you reach out.
Therapy
Therapy for Emotion Regulation
We help children and teens build the skills to notice what they are feeling and find ways to take care of it. We are not trying to get rid of emotions. We are helping them work with what they have.

Understanding What Is Driving It
When dysregulation is persistent or intense, an assessment can help clarify what is driving it. ADHD, anxiety, learning differences, and other factors all show up differently and need different support.

Support for You as a Parent
How the adults around a child respond in moments of dysregulation matters enormously. Parent coaching helps you understand what your child needs in those moments and how to meet them there.

How it works
Getting started does not have to feel complicated. When you reach out, our intake team takes care of the matching so your family is connected to the right clinician from the start.
Step 01
Tell us about your child.
A brief intake so we understand the full picture. What the reactions look like, what triggers them, and what your family has already tried.
Step 02
Meet your clinician.
We match based on your child's age, presentation, and your preferences. North York, Oakville, or virtually across Ontario.
Step 03
Build a plan together.
Your clinician works to understand what is driving the dysregulation and builds an approach around that. Not a generic coping skills program. A plan built around how your specific child works.
Step 04
Keep going.
We help you implement strategies, adjust as things shift, and support your child as they build the capacity to move through hard feelings without being overwhelmed by them.
The goal is never to feel less. It is to feel and know what to do next.
